General:
This project was initiated by Prof. Dr. Hahn who was also the supervisor of our theses work at the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences (Department of Geomatics, Computer Science and Mathematics).
The aim of this theses was to develop an Internet visualization of the Mount Everest Region in Nepal. This included the creation of Internet pages and the generation of a 3D geo-spatial VR model of the region suited for interation and delivery in photo-realistic 3D form through the Internet. This thesis synthesizes the results from the Master thesis “Digital Orthophotos of Mount Everest Region” prepared by Mr. Toya Baral from Nepal. From his work we got a digital terrain model and an orthophoto mosaic of the region.

Data Acquisition:
The photographs were taken in Dezember 1992 from a Cessna Citation II aircraft equipped with an analogueWild RC-30 aerial camera. The aerial image flight covered several strips from which 5 strips with alltogether 40 models (80% forward and 40% lateral overlap) have been used on this project. The average photo scale was around 1:50,000 and the flying height above ground in the order of 7,500 meters. The whole project area covers 35 x 40 km.

Data processing for the generation of DTM and orthoimages:
1. Scanning of the greyscale aerial images with 12 bit color-depth and 14 micron resolution
2. Automatic orientation using aerial triangulation technology
3. Production of digital terrain model of the same
4. Generation of orthoimages
5. Mosaicking of the orthoimages to one seamless image

Results - 3D Visualization:
The Orthomosaic and the digital terrain model are the two major sources to create the 3D geo-spatial VR model. Further, topographic maps and geocoded satellite images are included in the 3D modeling. To provide a rich information environment for the virtual visits of the region additionally trekking and ascending routes, location of the camps, places of interest (monasteries, etc.) and lots of other details are added.

For the creation the 3D geo-spatial VR models the Terra Builder and Terra Explorer Pro software packages from the Skyline Software Systems Company was used. Generation of the so-called ''mpt'' (the 3D data strucure) was carried out by the company
Terra-Biz. Thanks goes to Mr. Roesler and Mr. Schauer for the great support. For viewing the 3D models the Shareware programme Terra Explorer from Skyline Software Systems is required. Further information about Mt. Everest and the Khumbu region is collected in the present webpages.
